Episode 11: Adoption From All Angles
Rachel's Early Experience with Adoption
Rachel Broussard's introduction to adoption began with her sister, who was adopted by her parents when Rachel was just eight years old. This early exposure planted a seed that would later play a crucial role in her life's decisions and perspective on adoption. The openness and transparency her parents maintained regarding her sister’s adoption created a foundational understanding for Rachel.
Facing Unexpected Challenges
At 17, Rachel discovered she was pregnant, which led to one of the most challenging decisions of her life. Choosing adoption for her son was rooted in love and a desire to provide what she felt was best for him at the time. Her experience at Hannah House, a Christian maternity home, provided her with the support and shelter she needed during her pregnancy and the critical time when she made the decision to place her son for adoption. It was here that Rachel truly experienced a personal relationship with Christ that guided her through this difficult journey with peace.
The Adoption Process
Rachel connected with Catholic Charities in Little Rock, who supported her through the adoption process. Her primary criteria for an adoptive family were that they share her Christian faith and embrace her son’s biracial identity. Soon, she found a family that aligned perfectly with these wishes, which provided her with comfort and peace of mind that her son would be loved and cherished.
Life After Adoption
After the adoption, Rachel returned to Hannah House to complete her education before embarking on her college journey. Her experience and passion led her to pursue a career in social work, with a focus on foster care. During this period, she met Tavis, a foster child she later adopted, further broadening her understanding and connection to the adoption world.
Reconnecting with Her Son
Rachel’s story comes full circle in an awe-inspiring moment when she reconnects with her first son, Johnny. Over the years, Rachel had prayed and considered reaching out, and finally, in September 2024, she sent a heartfelt letter to Johnny and his adoptive parents. The eventual response from Johnny was filled with gratitude and a desire to know her and his biological family. Their reunion was nothing short of miraculous, highlighting the intricate bonds of family and love.
Impact and Reflections
Through her experiences, Rachel has learned to appreciate the journey and the people brought into her life. Her story is a powerful reminder of the love and trust required in adoption, both from a birth mother's perspective and as an adoptive parent. Her faith in God has been a guiding light, supporting her during the most challenging times.
