Episode 28: Stories That Stick

Introduction

Some stories stay with us long after we hear them. Sometimes it’s a sentence someone says. Sometimes it’s a perspective we had never considered. And sometimes, hearing someone else’s experience changes the way we understand our own.

In this episode of Perfectly Placed, I’m bringing together moments from conversations with past guests. These are stories about growing up adopted, navigating birth family relationships, becoming an adoptive parent, and learning to live with the parts of adoption that don’t always go as planned.

Each story is different, but every one has something to teach us.

The Words We Remember

For some adoptees, learning about their adoption started with simple, age-appropriate conversations at home. For others, the information came unexpectedly, sometimes through a sibling or a comment that was difficult to forget.

The words we use when talking about adoption matter. They can shape how a child understands their story and how they see themselves. Hearing these guests reflect on the messages they received growing up is a reminder that adoption conversations are not just about what children learn, but how they learn it.

Adoption Is More Than One Experience

There is no single way to experience adoption. Some adoptees grow up feeling secure in their stories, while others spend years working through questions about identity, belonging, and biological connections.

In these conversations, guests share what it has meant to understand where they came from, connect with birth family, and make sense of the relationships that have shaped their lives. Their experiences remind us not to assume we know how someone feels about adoption simply because we know they were adopted.

The Parts We Don't Always Talk About

Adoption can bring joy and connection, but it can also involve grief, uncertainty, and disappointment.

One guest shares the emotional weight of a failed match and the process of finding a way to move forward. Other conversations touch on the challenges adoptive parents face and the reality that love doesn't mean every part of the journey will be easy.

These are important stories to hear, too. When we make room for the hard parts of adoption, we make room for people to tell the truth about their experiences without feeling pressure to make them sound a certain way.

Learning to See the Whole Story

Birth parents, adoptees, adoptive parents, and foster parents each bring their own experiences and perspectives to adoption. Listening to those perspectives can challenge what we thought we knew and help us better understand the people behind the stories.

Throughout this episode, guests share moments that changed how they viewed family, belonging, and the decisions that brought them to where they are today. Their words remind us that we can learn a great deal when we listen without rushing to judge or assume.

Stories That Lead to Action

Some stories don't just change the way we think. They move us to do something.

In this episode, you'll also hear about the experiences that inspired advocacy, encouraged conversations about adoption, and helped guests recognize new ways to support children and families. Education and awareness often begin with one person sharing their story—and another person being willing to listen.

Why These Stories Matter

I started Perfectly Placed because I believe adoption stories deserve to be heard from the people who have lived them. No single conversation can explain every part of adoption, and no one guest can speak for everyone.

But when we listen to a variety of experiences, we gain a fuller understanding of what adoption can look like. We become more thoughtful about our words, more aware of the challenges families may face, and better equipped to support the people around us.

These are the stories that stick with us. I hope a few of them stay with you, too.
